  • Dr Greg Barton

One of Australia’s leading Indonesian culture and politics scholars has been announced as the first Rector Designate of The Deakin University Lancaster University Indonesia campus.

Professor Barton has thirty-five years of experience researching Islam and social movements in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. He is one of Australia’s leading scholars on Indonesia, Islam, Muslim society, security, and politics.

From August 2015, he was a Research Professor in Global Islamic Politics at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation (ADI) at Deakin University. He was previously Herb Feith Research Professor for studying Indonesia at Monash University (2007-2015).

He was also a member of the Australia-Indonesia Centre (AIC) staff team from establishing AIC at Monash in 2014. Professor Barton is also an Adjunct Professor at the Graduate School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG), University of Indonesia, and a Senior Fellow with the UAE-based Hedayah Center in Abu Dhabi.

  • Dr. Haezreena Begum, PhD

Criminologist and the Deputy Dean of Higher Degrees at the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. She was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1997 and has extensive experience in criminal and civil litigation.

She was a Partner of a legal firm, Lokman Reena & Co, in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. Dr. Haezreena obtained her PhD in Criminology from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and her LLM in International Human Rights Law from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. She obtained her Bachelor of Laws Degree and Diploma in Sharia Law and Practice from the International Islamic University of Malaysia.

Dr. Haezreena’s research interests range over several different subject areas, including criminological theories, human trafficking, victimisation, cyber violence, sexual crimes, gender, policing, smuggling, migration, human rights, and international crimes. She has written numerous articles on the nuances of victimisation, sexual violence, human trafficking, and other criminal justice issues. Her works are often cited and referred to by local and international NGOs and government agencies.

 

  • Aziff Azuddin

IMAN’s Research Director. Aziff Azuddin is  IMAN’s Research Director and data analyst with over a decade of experience in media, public policy, and urban sociology. He has published journalistic and research work in various sectors, including urban development, cultural heritage and community, and faith and politics.

He is currently pursuing his PhD, studying Muslim identities in urban spaces. Outside academia, Aziff is also involved in research projects that include, but are not limited to, the political economy of religion, youth and nationhood, and urban livability.
